Book "IN-XILIOS Photographs by Aaron Sosa"

Everybody knows that to emigrate it's not an easy process, a lot of things has been said about it. The exterior landscape changes but it also changes the inner landscape. How a photographer looks at both landscapes? How to commune within himself the exterior and the interior? What remains in his gaze and transfers from the old home to the new one? These are the questions with which Aaron Sosa tries to answer through 76 images (76 keys) at In-Xilios: a visual essay about an emigrant Venezuelan photographer who is watching and discovering Panama, his current living place and, at the same time, rediscovering himself because, at the end, travels are exactly for that. Educated in the Street photography tradition, Sosa's work always points to try to dissect reality. He cuts it, rummages it, analyzes it, makes hypothesis about it. In this case, the Central American country's particular reality in an specific moment of its history, which becomes parallel to the particular moment of the photographer's history. The exterior and the interior are in constant communication with each other. Panama is also -specially for the five last years- the second home many Venezuelan emigrants. In a certain way, Sosa's gaze is the gaze of all his countrymen. So, he becomes part of a tradition of migrant photographers like Atget or Kértesz (relatively speaking, of course) whom transformed in icons the cities where they were living. Sosa's photographs offers to us complex, poly-semantic, fractals readings about the everyday, the places he is living or the pieces of reality he is constructing through the camera lens. Even if every image is a reproduction, representation, reconstruction, reinvention, in his work this is obvious. But not obvious because it's rough or not deep enough, but for its immediate air of disturbance; for what it has of the imagination and of the imagine: a discrete game of seduction with the fantastic. Probably this is possible because he is also working from the reproduction, representation, reconstruction and reinvention of his own identity. There is no objectivity in this book, every image is a frame of mind and there's a long time that photography stopped pretending to be objective. Each one of these images is a notation about a process -the travel, the migration- that is a initiation ritual: we set out from a state of mind to transform ourselves and return being another. On the road, all the Circes and Laestrygonians, all the landscapes, all the times we dream about Ithaca.
